The Conscious Wardrobe by Sutirang

The Story Behind Our Handloom Fabrics: Khadi Cotton, Eri Silk & the Art of Handblock Printing

by Sutirang

At Sutirang, every dress begins long before it reaches your wardrobe. It starts in the hands of a weaver, a dyer, and a block printer - artisans who carry centuries of craft in their fingertips. When you wear a Sutirang dress, you're wearing that story.

Why It All Matters

Fast fashion produces more carbon emissions than aviation and shipping combined. Handloom fabrics, by contrast, use no electricity in their production. Every handwoven metre supports a weaver's livelihood and reduces the environmental cost of getting dressed.

Most fast fashion is built for margins, speed and volume - not your skin or long-term health. Viscose and synthetic fabrics shed micro-fibers every time you wear them. You breath them in. They sit on your skin all day. We are not saying throw everything away or stress about it. Just be conscious. Make gradual upgrades. When buying new clothes, look for natural materials. Yes, they cost more - that's why the move is buy less, but buy better.

At Sutirang, we believe that what you wear is a quiet statement about what you value. We make dresses for women who brunch, travel, and live consciously and we make them from fabrics that reflect that intention.

Here's a closer look at the fabrics we love and why we choose them.

Khadi Cotton : The Fabric of Conscious Living

Khadi is hand-spun and hand-woven - a fabric that is, by its very nature, slow. Each metre takes time, skill, and intention. Khadi cotton is breathable, lightweight, and gets softer with every wash, making it ideal for India's warm climate and for women who move through their days with ease.

We use khadi cotton in dresses like our Beige Middle Button Midi Dress and Olive Green Belted Maxi Dress - pieces designed to feel as good as they look.

Khadi Silk : Where Tradition Meets Luxury

Khadi silk carries the same handspun heritage as khadi cotton, but with a natural sheen and drape that feels quietly luxurious. It's not the stiff, formal silk of occasion wear - it's soft, fluid, and effortlessly elegant. Perfect for a brunch, a weekend trip, or simply a day when you want to feel a little special.

Eri Silk : The Peace Silk

Eri silk is one of India's most ethical fibres. Unlike conventional silk, eri is produced without harming the silkworm - the cocoon is harvested only after the moth has emerged naturally. The result is a warm, matte-textured silk that is both cruelty-free and deeply rooted in the traditions of Northeast India.

For women who live consciously, eri silk is more than a fabric choice - it's a value.

Cotton Silk : The Best of Both

Our cotton silk blends bring together the breathability of cotton and the gentle lustre of silk. The result is a fabric that travels well, resists creasing, and looks polished with very little effort - ideal for the woman who is always on the move.

Handblock Printing : Art on Every Metre

Every Sutirang print is applied by hand, using carved wooden blocks and natural dyes. No two pieces are identical - slight variations in pressure and placement are not imperfections, they are proof of the human hand behind every garment.

Our artisans work in India's traditional printing clusters, keeping alive a craft that has existed for over a thousand years. When you choose a handblock printed dress, you're choosing to keep that craft alive too.
